4 c. apples
1 c. bread crumbs (NOT Italian seasoned)
1/2 c. sugar
cinnamon to taste
3 Tbsp. butter
1/4 c. water
A baked apple dessert a little different from the norm. The sliced apples make a pretty presentation.
This recipe made me think of scalloped potatoes - layers of slices with seasoning in between.
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Peel, core, and slice apples thinly. (My daughter loves to use the apple corer-peeler-slicer that clamps to the counter. It makes nice neat slices and it's fun to turn the handle.)
Spray a baking dish with nonstick spray.
Place the bread crumbs into a small bowl.
Place sugar into a small bowl.
Sprinkle a layer of breadcrumbs in the baking dish.
Follow with a layer of apples. Sprinkle lemon juice lightly over the apples.
Sprinkle sugar liberally over the apples, then shake cinnamon over the apples to taste.
Continue to layer:
breadcrumbs - apples - sugar/cinnamon.
End with breadcrumbs.
Cut butter into small pieces and dot the top. Then pour the water into the baking dish (at the edge of the dish so as not to sploosh the breadcrumb layer off).
Bake at 350°F for 45 min. Serve with Vanilla Sauce
cooked to the thickness of a dessert sauce.
